Your birthday is meant to be a celebration of your life.
A celebration of how much better the world is because you are in it.
A celebration of all the growth you have gone through both physical and emotional.
A celebration of all the wonderful things you have done and plan to do in the future.
If you don't celebrate your birthday odds are you aren't looking back at all the changes you've made or looking forward to see how far you want to go in the future.
Your birthday is also a chance for the people who are in your life that care about you, to celebrate you and how much they love you. Spending time with those people (I'm not saying they have to get you a gift or buy you things) not only gives them the ability to celebrate you but it also helps fill your need for social interactions.
We as humans need to be social, even those of us who are introverts, because our mental health and well being depends on us interacting with people. Feeling like we are part of a community or group leads to better emotional health.
Let's face it, as we get older, we have kids and jobs that take up our time and we stop being as social as we were when we were young. Your birthday is a great way to add in some social interactions where you can catch up with friends who you may not see very regularly. What better reason to get together than to celebrate a birthday.
However, the main reason you should celebrate your birthday is that it's a great opportunity to give yourself credit for all the wonderful changes you have made to improve your life and the life of those around you over the last year. It's the perfect time to reflect on who you are in this moment, who you were a year ago and who you hope to be in a year.
Life sometimes gets chaotic and we can forget by the time another birthday comes along, just how many awesome things we have done over the last year. Remind yourself of all of your awesomeness and allow those who care about you to do that same. Re-framing your birthday into a celebration and reminder of all the great things that have happened will help you find more happiness throughout the rest of the year.
